Before embarking on a lifetime of drugs, a few simple changes may get your blood pressure back to normal. Perhaps you aren’t ready for a complete diet change. There are many individual foods that have been found to reduce blood pressure. Obviously, these foods cannot make up for poor lifestyle choices. But when added to a plan of moderate exercise and weight loss these foods can help.

If you are going to build a site you need to get your piece of Internet real estate and buy your website address, domain name, or URL. The sad truth is most people rush into this process without really giving it much thought, which is a very costly and foolish mistake. There is a lot more than meets the eye when it comes to picking a domain name to drive traffic, so here is a list of secret tips you must follow.

Comment on “Get Your Internet Domains Now” in Forbes.com.

Wow SuccessClick. I never knew the power of generic domain names. How foolish Ebay, Google, and Amazon was. Of course, they followed the path blazed by the foolish Xerox, Kodak, and Apple. I’m sure the owners of cottagecheese.com, milk.com, and watch.com are raking it in.

Generic dictionary domain names are modern-day tulip bulbs whose only value results from hyping pitchmen such as yourself. How in the world is watch.com working for the domain owner every day. Has a given portfolio of 40 dictionary domains or LLLL.com domains increased in value consistently year-after-year? For example, does Torino Pasta gain measurable benefits from owning pasta.com and biscotti.com?

Your pitch - that a generic domain can rule the web - only makes sense if consumers are idiots and have no idea how to use a search engine. Do you reasonably expect that the average user will type in “doctors.com” instead of “webmd?” In fact, I imagine that the typical user knows that generic domains usually lead to worthless parking parking pages.

As for sound investments - generic domain names in and of themselves by definition do not have trademark or other intellectual property protection. And the question of whether domains are even property is still in question. Domain names are government by a confusing and sometimes contradictory set of rules - and ruled over by a non-profit corporation, not a government entity.

In the recent Commonwealth v. 141 Internet Domain Names, Case No. 08-CI-1409 (Ky Cir. Ct., Oct. 16, 2008), it was argued by a group including Network Solutions and the industry trade group ICA that:

“The Opposing Groups and Lawyers … collectively assert that domain names are akin to a telephone number or a business or residential address only; that domain names are but a combination of letters and numbers, which serves as a mnemonic aid, nothing more. They argue that domains are not property, but are rights in a service contract.”

Domain names. Tulip bulbs.

[in response to another article comment that said, in part, “A domain name is an appreciable marketing asset. It grows in value. It works for you day after day. It doesn’t stop working after a few weeks, like an expensive ad campaign will do using traditional advertising methods.” posted by Stephen Douglas of successclick.com]

Insurance company Transamerica has filed a lawsuit against Moniker, Oversee.net, and multiple John Does in United States District Court in the Southern District of Florida. The suit alleges that Moniker registered domain names including the Transamerica trademark and used these to profit for pay-per-click and pay-per-lead programs.

The main thing is that those old domains did not create problems for you: “second hand” domains might have had negative reputation with Google (they might have been part of the network, involved in illegitimate or spammy techniques, etc). Thus you may find hard time getting the site indexed or by linking from it now blacklist your other site.

FINDING A PITHY and inexpensive domain name for your business's web site these days is next to impossible.

To date, 146 million top-level domain names (that is, names that end with extensions such as ".com" or ".net") have already been registered, according to the most recent report from VeriSign, the big Silicon Valley registry. Another domain-name provider, the Go Daddy Group of Scottsdale, Ariz., says it registers, renews or transfers over one million domain names each month, or once every 1.3 seconds. And two more registries, Moniker.com and Register.com, say don't even bother trying to register a five-letter single-word ".com" — they're all gone, as are all three- and four-letter configurations.

Stew Friedman on his blog:

President-Elect Obama's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, recently said: "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. And what I mean by that is an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before." Emanuel–using a phrase of which Tom Friedman (no relation) is also fond (he heard it from economist Paul Romer)–was talking about how governments must take advantage of our current economic crisis. But the same idea applies to each of us, as individuals and as business leaders.

Most people think skulls are gruesome. That leering grin and those black holes for eyes are creepy looking, and it doesn’t help that they’re all over the place during Halloween. People who have skulls sitting around in their houses are usually portrayed as ugly, old hags like the witch in Walt Disney's "Snow White," so why does this young lady have a skull perched on her lap like some kind of kitten? Who is she?

Great and timely article over at Southern Ledger's Drawing Conclusions
